Recovering from Cancer Treatment; From a 4-time Survivor!
|

Going through cancer treatment is a hard thing (Duh!); and the end of cancer treatment is not exactly the end! The end of cancer treatment is a new beginning and the start of recovery and this is a very crucial time. It's a time to get on a schedule for getting yourself back to normal; healthy again (if not healthier!)
The problem is though, a lot of times people finish treatment and are sent home without a plan to get back on track; to get back to feeling better. "What do I eat?...What about exercise (If any)?" There are so many things to think about; and the goal is to simply get back to normal, or maybe even a little healthier than normal. Below are a few tips that I want to focus on for people who have recently finished cancer treatment.
Your Body is NOT the Same After Treatment!
Even though you may be done with treatment, your body is not the same and/or back to normal; you should already be aware of this. So if you are pushing yourself to immediately do all of the things you used to do, DON'T; listen to your body (more on this below.) Also, if you are not pushing yourself to do anything, well, get to it!
Depending on how much treatment you received and/or the severity of your cancer, getting back to "normal" can take a while. Especially if you had a stem cell/bone marrow transplant.
Diet, Vitamins and Natural Supplementation
After treatment you should really focus on getting your body stronger with your diet and with the use of vitamins and natural supplementation. I suggest eating all organic foods. Eat fruits, vegetables and foods high in protein to rebuild muscle. Also, you may consider taking a QUALITY multi-vitamin. The supplement milk thistle is GREAT for repairing and/or detoxifying the liver after harsh chemo and other medications have their toll. You may also want to look into the supplement COq10 which can help combat fatigue and give the immune system an extra boost. I highly recommend a QUALITY omega fish oil complex. Omega fish oil complexes can help fight off memory loss associated with "chemo brain" and has also been linked to prevention of cancer among other things.
Exercise!
You should incorporate exercise into your routine. Start slow and build up. Your exercise routine should consist of weight training and cardiovascular exercise. Again, put together a plan, talk with a personal trainer if necessary. Follow this plan religiously to regain energy and strength, BUT do not work out so hard that you begin to make your body weaker. In other words, don't over train! Always listen to your body! If one day you are too tired to go to the gym, then don't, let your body rest. On the same note though, don't always use "I'm too tired!" as an excuse for not going to the gym. Working out will help you regain the energy you had before cancer and cancer treatment.
Don't Be Afraid To Ask!
As I said earlier, after cancer treatment your body is just not the same. Radiation and chemotherapy can affect not only your immune system, memory and energy levels, but it can also affect hormones. If you have been radiated, you may suffer from thyroid problems as well as low testosterone/estrogen levels. Don't be afraid to ask about hormone replacement therapy. Be your top advocate. Demand the tests and inquire about options that can help get your energy levels back to normal. You may need a thyroid medication and or hormone replacement therapy. It can make all the difference in energy levels, mood and a better quality of life!
